Attic Insulation

Your Professional Attic Insulation Contractor in Georgetown is VK Roofing

You can make your home more energy efficient with proper attic insulation. There’s more to a roof than simply keeping the moisture out. Attic insulation plays a key role in a healthy roof system. It can:

  • decrease heating and cooling costs (up to 20%)
  • prevent mould growth in attic spaces
  • increase the longevity of the roof deck & shingles
  • improve airflow throughout the home

In 2017, the Ontario Building Code updated the minimum home insulation values to R60. If your house is older than 2017 and you have not upgraded your attic insulation since then, then your home is not properly insulated. Professional attic insulation companies like VK Roofing are knowledgeable and understand what is the best insulation for attic applications.

Insulation Removal

It is important to assess the condition of any existing insulation, before re-insulating an attic space.

Old attic insulation may have been affected by damage from moisture, mould, vermiculite, compression, or animal damage.

Damaged insulation, and other factors, can cause serious health and safety issues if not removed properly.

VK Roofing teams are trained and experienced in removing insulation safely and effectively:

  • Special machines are use to remove existing insulation, before air sealing, ventilating and re-insulating;
  • teams are trained in asbestos awareness, so that proper referrals are provided for specialized removal and clean-up of such toxic materials.
  • With their knowledge and experience, VK Roofing teams are well-equipped to recommend steps that are needed before re-insulating, to help you achieve a healthy, well-balanced attic space.

Air Sealing

Air sealing is very important for a healthy home. 98% of the moisture and water vapour moves in and out of your home through leaks. A vapour barrier in your attic keeps any moist air from leaking into your attic from your living space.

Gaps in the barrier allow moist air to leak into the attic where it can condense and cause serious problems, including the growth of mould.

VK Roofing can check for gaps around common spots where moist air might leak into the attic:

  • around bathroom and kitchen vents that penetrate the ceiling, such as bathroom fan boxes, electrical boxes, and plumbing stacks;
  • gaps or tears in the vapour barrier in the attic;
  • at sill plates.

Air sealing, combined with well-installed attic insulation, reduces the chance of moisture build-up or that mould might grow in your home.

VK Roofing Inc. is trained and certified in attic air sealing by NAIMA (North American Insulation Manufacturers Association) and can help you maintain an attic that is cool, dry and moisture free.

Ventilation

Your roof needs to breathe!

Ventilation is essential for a healthy roof and attic system. Whether you are re-roofing, upgrading your attic insulation, or correcting attic ventilation concerns, VK Roofing ensures the air is flowing in your attic!

A properly ventilated attic ensures the attic space stays cold and dry in the winter months, and remains cooler on hot summer days.

Air is drawn into the attic through vents in the soffit (the underside of the overhang of your roof) or other specialized vents where there is no soffit. This fresh air then flows into the attic space, past the attic insulation via channels created by attic baffles (see diagram).  And, finally, this attic air is drawn back outside, along with any moisture, through roof exhaust vents or ridgevents, which are installed on the roof deck and are designed to draw air back outside.

This process ensures moisture and heat do not build up in the attic:

  • helping prevent the growth of mould;
  • helping prevent ice dams;
  • helping prevent premature failure of roofing materials;
  • helping prevent water damage within the home;
  • helping prevent compromise to the roof deck if it becomes wet.

VK Roofing is trained in creating a ventilation system specific to each unique home:

  • using specific ratios, based upon attic square footage, type of roof, etc., to determine the required intake and exhaust vents needed to properly ventilate the space;
  • using proper placement of vents, essential to create the “chimney-effect” of air flow, both intake and exhaust, as described above

Signs Your Home Needs Insulation Replacement

When your attic insulation is correct, it will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However, many Georgetown homes are not adequately insulated or have had insulation disrupted over the years. Here are some signs that indicate you might need an attic insulation upgrade:

  • Increased utility bills: Poor insulation will not control airflow, which will force your HVAC equipment to work harder and use more energy.
  • Fluctuating temperature: Varying temperatures throughout the home can be an indicator that attic insulation has decreased.
  • Drafty Home: Unusual air movement in your the home can be a sign that air is not sealed within the attic space.
  • Icicles and Ice Damming: when attic insulation fails to keep the heat contained in the wintertime, it will escape and heat the snow. This snow will turn to water and then refreeze on your gutters forming icicles or, more concerning, ice dams.
  • Mould Growth/Moisture: Mould in your attic can be a sign that cooler and warmer air is mixing creating moisture. If attic insulation is installed correctly, along with proper ventilation, cold and warm air should not mix and moisture will not build up.

Just like our roofing installation process, our attic insulation installation technique is careful and thorough:

  • Conscientious work from prep to clean up
  • Your home is our first concern
  • Drop sheets are placed in any area where workers will be present
  • Attic space is prepared by removing any old or ineffective baffles and installing new ones where necessary
  • A weather strip is added to the attic hatch to ensure there are no gaps for air loss
  • Styrofoam Sheet Insulation is adhered to the attic hatch to prevent air loss
  • Our installers add rulers to ensure an even R-value is blown into the entire space for optimal insulation
  • Insulation is blown into the attic space to bring the R-value up to R60, as required by the Ontario Building Code
  • We remove any garbage and all debris is vacuumed from the home
  • A final inspection ensures that everything has been cleaned and put back where it was before the crew arrived

Signs You Need Attic Insulation Services:

The attic is often a neglected extension of a home. There are various signs that can be indications that you need to insulate your attic more efficiently. Do you notice…

  • Inconsistent temperature throughout the house
  • Abnormally high utility bills
  • Roof looking worn due to leaks
  • Ice buildup/icicles/ice damming issues on the roof during the winter
  • Presence of pests and rodents in your ceiling or roof
  • Water/moisture markings on your ceilings
  • Build-up of moisture on windows during cold temperatures

These signs of insufficient attic insulation are important not to ignore as they can lead to long-term damage such as mould build-up, premature deterioration of shingles and can leave your home at risk of major water damage during the winter months.
